(AP) ? Lawyers for a French pharmaceutical group suspected in the deaths of at least 500 people argued Monday that a trial against their client should be halted as two separate cases should be rolled into one before the court can proceed.

The trial of Servier on charges of “aggravated deception” opened in Nanterre, west of Paris just as a similar case is being investigated in the French capital over the diabetes drug Mediator.

The company is accused of hiding that Mediator ? also used for weight loss ? contained an amphetamine called benfluorex, which was taken off the market in 2009 after being found to thicken heart valves.

Servier lawyers argued against holding the Nanterre trial, claiming that the laboratory could not be judged twice on the same grounds.

“Your court can in no way rule on the core of this case,” said defense lawyer Herve Temime, arguing that the investigation is not yet fully complete.

The court claims the nature of benfluorex was allegedly hidden to obtain approval for the drug, first marketed in 1976. So far, charges have been filed against seven people, including company founder Jacques Servier, now 90.

It alleges the drug, often prescribed as a hunger suppressant, was behind the deaths of between 500 and 2,000 people over more than three decades.

The court is expected to rule May 21 on whether the trial, which was previously expected to run through July 6, can continue.

Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Glee’ Cameo: Co-Star Perez Hilton Weighs In!

Celebrity-gossip blogger skirts addressing Lohan’s alleged unprofessionalism while shooting this week’s ‘Nationals’ episode.

Celebrity-gossip blogger Perez Hilton guest stars on this week’s big “Nationals” episode of “Glee,” but was uncharacteristically reluctant to address the rumors of fellow guest star Lindsay Lohan’s alleged on-set misbehavior when MTV News caught up with him at Wango Tango in Los Angeles this weekend.

“I’m on ‘Nationals,’ a very important episode, and Lindsay Lohan is also on this episode,” Hilton told MTV News. “And it’s a nail-biter. Everybody has to watch.”

When the conversation turned to allegations that Lohan was hours late to set and was difficult once she finally arrived, Hilton chose his words very carefully, turning the conversation back to himself — and in so doing, seemed to imply that Lohan was not at her professional best.

Asked about talk of Lohan’s misbehavior, Hilton said, “I showed up to set early and prepared and was very happy to be there and professional, excited and appreciative for the opportunity.”

Rumors of on-set trouble erupted April 25, when actress Dot-Marie Jones, who plays Coach Beiste on the Fox hit, tweeted about an unnamed person’s late arrival to set, causing delays in filming. “Gonna be a long day!! Some ppl show up late and just throw a wrench in things,” Jones reportedly tweeted. “Not cool! I’d rather be an hour early (I was) than 5 minutes late!” Jones’ tweet has since been deleted.

Regarding Lohan’s alleged tardiness, the actress’ rep, Steve Honig, told E! News that there was a mixup with her call time, and said any claims of problems on the “Glee” set are “utter B.S.”

“This is a classic example of people trying to bash Lindsay. She busted her ass yesterday and is back on set again today,” he continued.

Like Hilton, Lohan appears as herself on the episode. The pair play judges at the national singing competition the show’s choir, New Directions, participates in.

After underwear plot, Saudi officials claim headway against AQAP

Saudi officials refused to discuss their involvement in disrupting the latest underwear bomb plot from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), but say they are making gains against the group.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), based in Yemen, remains a major threat but drone strikes and Saudi counterterrorism efforts are making significant headway against the franchise, say Saudi interior ministry officials.

Speaking to a visiting group of US journalists in Riyadh, the officials underscored the importance of US-Saudi cooperation in fighting terrorism but refused to confirm or deny reports that Saudi intelligence was involved in foiling the latest underwear bomb plot by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

?This information [about who was responsible] going out at this particular time ? doesn?t serve anyone,? said Lt. Col. Sultan Mohammed of the ministry?s counterterrorism department, who has been tracking Islamist militants since the late 1990s.

Since 9/11 and a wave of domestic terrorist attacks in the following years, the Saudi government has taken strong measures to shut down jihadis and their ideology in the country. They have arrested more than 11,000 suspected militants over the past decade, about half of whom were released while the rest are being tried in a series of cases now moving through Saudi courts. The Ministry of Interior has also instituted a broad program to prevent the spread of jihadi ideology, which includes everything from requiring licenses for religious sermons to the promotion of books and leaflets that counter militant ideology to a generously funded rehabilitation center originally started for ex-Guant?namo detainees.

Officials said today that the Saudi government had now largely ?destroyed? Al Qaeda as an organization in Saudi Arabia, wiped out public sympathy for the group, and said that drone strikes over the past year in Yemen have weakened the group there. But they remain very much aware of AQAP?s efforts to regroup in Yemen in order to launch attacks against not only the West but also the Saudi kingdom.

Formerly Al Qaeda had separate branches in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but by early 2009 they had merged into one organization.

Princeton Review Founder Launches Noodle, A Search & Recommendation Engine For Education

Noodle_logoGoogle’s mission to organize the world’s information changed the Web, and it remains true that, if you know what you’re looking for, there isn’t a more useful search tool. But if you don’t, that’s not always true. Take education, which sees 3.7 billion searches every month. Generally speaking, education-related decisions — like what school to go to, what to study — aren’t made in a snap, but the process nearly always starts with a Google search. Go search for “test prep.” Sure, PageRank serves some helpful results, but the tutor or program that’s right for you may be on page 20. Knowing that it can take weeks or even months to refine a search and make a decision on all matters education, Noodle Education is today launching what it believes is a better solution: A search and recommendation engine that helps refine the process and suggest educational opportunities based on what’s important to you.
